أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًۭا ٦

Have We not smoothed out the earth ˹like a bed˺,

وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًۭا ٧

and ˹made˺ the mountains as ˹its˺ pegs,1

In the first verse Allah describes the Earth as a “bed” (mihada), which simply means a comfortable, suitable resting place finely tuned for human life. He has placed into the earth firm mountains, so it does not shake with you, as well as rivers, and pathways so you may find your way.

The Quran describes mountains as rawaasi,which means firm, heavy stabilizers. Geologically, the Earth’s rigid outer crust (the lithosphere) is broken into massive continental plates that effectively float on a denser, semi-fluid rock layer beneath them (the asthenosphere). Science shows that mountains aren’t just piles of rock on the surface—they have massive “roots” extending miles deep into the Earth, just like the huge hidden part of an iceberg. These deep roots act like heavy anchors that absorb massive underground pressure, balancing the continental plates (isostasy) so the ground stays firm and steady enough for life to thrive.

3. Deep Sea Darkness and Internal Waves

The Quran describes the ocean’s structure as ‘waves upon waves’ and depicts its deep-sea darkness as being layered beneath dark clouds

أَوْ كَظُلُمَـٰتٍۢ فِى بَحْرٍۢ لُّجِّىٍّۢ يَغْشَىٰهُ مَوْجٌۭ مِّن فَوْقِهِۦ مَوْجٌۭ مِّن فَوْقِهِۦ سَحَابٌۭ ۚ ظُلُمَـٰتٌۢ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ إِذَآ أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُۥ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَىٰهَا ۗ وَمَن لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ ٱللَّهُ لَهُۥ نُورًۭا فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن نُّورٍ ٤٠

Or ˹their deeds are˺ like the darkness in a deep sea, covered by waves upon waves, topped by ˹dark˺ clouds. Darkness upon darkness! If one stretches out their hand, they can hardly see it. And whoever Allah does not bless with light will have no light!—

When you dive deep into the ocean, the water doesn’t stay the same all the way down—it actually forms separate layers. Near the surface, sunlight shines brightly and wind creates the big surface waves we see from a boat. But as you go deeper down, two crazy things happen. First, the water acts like a gigantic sponge for light, soaking up colors one by one until all sunlight completely disappears below 1,000 meters, leaving the deep sea in pitch-black darkness. Second, because warm surface water floats on top of heavy, freezing cold water, a second set of hidden underwater waves—called internal waves—forms deep under the surface. So if you look at a deep ocean on a cloudy day, you have clouds blocking the sun at the top, regular wind waves on the surface, and massive hidden waves riding underneath in complete darkness! Astonishingly, Allah described this exact natural structure—clouds overhead, surface waves, internal waves, and layered deep-sea darkness—over 1,400 years ago in the Quran.

4. The Barrier Between Two Seas

The Quran points out a fascinating natural phenomenon where two large bodies of water meet side by side without instantly blending together.

مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ ١٩

He merges the two bodies of ˹fresh and salt˺ water,

بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌۭ لَّا يَبْغِيَانِ ٢٠

yet between them is a barrier they never cross.

We send down rain from the sky in perfect measure, causing it to soak into the earth. And We are surely able to take it away.—

Modern meteorology and hydrogeology reveal just how delicate this design is: if raindrops were much larger, their impact force would crush crops and destroy topsoil, while smaller drops would simply evaporate in mid-air before ever nourishing the land. This controlled precipitation maintains global climate stability, preventing catastrophic droughts or endless flooding that would wipe out entire ecosystems. Even more impressively, instead of letting all this rainwater wash away, the earth acts like a giant sponge, absorbing it through porous rock down into massive subterranean reservoirs known as aquifers, keeping vast supplies of fresh drinking water locked safely underground for millennia—exactly as Allah described over 1,400 years ago.

1. The Quranic Description: Kuwwirat

إِذَا ٱلشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ

“When the sun is wrapped up…”

The Arabic word used here is Kuwwirat (كُوِّرَتْ). In classical Arabic linguistics, this word stems from Takwir, which literally means to gather one part of something into another by folding or wrapping it. The classic Arabic example of this action is Takwir al-Imamah—the exact motion of folding and wrapping a turban tightly around a head, or folding cloth together into a compact bundle.

To explain how the Sun’s radiation and structure behave, classical exegesis records the linguistic and physical explanation derived from Ibn Abbas:In Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Surah 81:1): Explaining Takwir, scholars recorded that Kuwwirat means gathering one part into another—specifically like Takwir al-Imamah (the wrapping/folding of a turban). The light that currently radiates outward across space will be folded back into the Sun itself, forcing it to compress and collapse inward.

Before its light vanishes completely, Quranic verses and early companion describe a dramatic transformation in color and appearance:

The Red Transformation: In Tafsir Ibn Kathir and Tafsir al-Tabari, companion statements regarding cosmic transformations (such as Surah Ar-Rahman 55:37) note that celestial bodies change state and color, becoming “red like a rose or hot oil” .

The Final Darkening: Following this phase, Ali bin Abi Talhah reported from Ibn Abbas in Tafsir al-Tabari (Vol. 24, p. 237) that Ibn Abbas stated the exact words describing the end of Kuwwirat:”كُوِّرَتْ: أُظْلِمَتْ” > “Kuwwirat means it will be darkened.” Al-`Awfi similarly reported from Ibn Abbas:”تَذْهَبُ” > “Its light will go away completely.”

“Whoever wishes to look at the Day of Judgment as if he is seeing it with his own eyes, let him read: ‘When the sun is wrapped up…’” > — (Recorded in Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3333 | Sahih)

3. How Modern Astrophysics Explains the Death of Stars

For thousands of years, ancient civilizations assumed the Sun was immortal. In the 20th century, nuclear physics revealed the exact lifecycle of stars:

Running Out of Fuel: Stars stay bright by fusing hydrogen into helium in their cores. Eventually, this nuclear fuel runs out.
